SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What Is the Difference?
Three acronyms, one goal: being the source people and machines turn to. What each discipline covers, where they overlap, and how to decide where to invest first.
The short version
SEO helps your pages get crawled, indexed and ranked in search results. AEO helps your content get selected as a direct answer, whether that is a featured snippet, a voice response or a line in an AI summary. GEO helps your brand and content get understood and referenced when generative systems compose an answer from several sources.
They are layers, not alternatives. A page that can’t be crawled won’t be quoted. A page that is crawled but vague is unlikely to be chosen as the answer. And a brand described inconsistently across the web is harder for any system to summarise accurately.
What SEO covers
Search engine optimization is the discipline of making a website discoverable and competitive in search results. It has three broad parts: technical access (can search engines crawl, render and index your pages?), relevance (does each page match the intent behind the queries it targets?) and authority (do other credible sources link to and reference you?).
SEO is measured in impressions, rankings, clicks and, ultimately, the leads and revenue that organic visits produce. It is also the foundation the other two disciplines depend on. Google’s AI Overviews draw on its index, and many generative search tools retrieve web pages before they write an answer.
What AEO adds
Answer engine optimization focuses on the answer itself. When someone asks a direct question, search features and assistants look for a passage that responds clearly, accurately and in a usable format. AEO is the work of making your best answers easy to find and extract.
In practice that means researching the questions buyers actually ask, putting a clear answer near the top of the relevant section, choosing the right format for the intent (a definition, a list of steps, a comparison table), and using structured data that matches what the page visibly says. None of this guarantees a featured snippet or answer placement, but it removes the obstacles that make selection unlikely.
What GEO adds
Generative engine optimization deals with systems that synthesise. Tools such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews combine information from several sources into a single response, often with citations. What they say about your brand depends on what is available, consistent and credible across the web, including on sites you don’t control.
GEO therefore looks beyond your own pages: how your company, products and people are described in profiles, directories, reviews and publications; which sources are cited for questions in your category; and whether your content offers specific evidence, such as original data, examples and expert input, that is worth referencing. It also needs its own measurement approach, because generative answers vary between runs and platforms.
Where they overlap
Most of the work that helps one discipline helps the others. Crawlable, fast, well-structured pages support all three. So does content that answers real questions with clarity and evidence, and a brand that is described consistently wherever it appears.
The differences are mostly in emphasis and measurement. SEO is judged on rankings and traffic. AEO is judged on whether your answers are selected. GEO is judged on mention rates, citations and how accurately you are described across a defined set of prompts.
- Shared foundation: technical health, clear information architecture, useful content
- SEO emphasis: relevance and authority for ranked results
- AEO emphasis: concise, well-formatted answers to specific questions
- GEO emphasis: entity consistency, evidence and third-party coverage
Where to start
If your site has technical problems or weak rankings, start with SEO, because it limits everything else. If you rank well but rarely win snippets or answer features, AEO is the next layer. If you are missing from AI answers, or described inaccurately in them, a GEO-focused visibility audit will show what is driving that.
For most businesses the practical first step is an audit that looks at all three together, followed by a roadmap that sequences the work. Treating them as separate projects with separate vendors tends to produce duplicated effort and conflicting advice.
Key takeaways
- SEO, AEO and GEO are layers of one strategy, not competing services.
- SEO is the foundation: AI search experiences rely heavily on indexed web content.
- AEO improves how clearly your content answers specific questions.
- GEO improves how your brand is understood and referenced across generative systems.
